Fatehpur Sikri, uma cidade no estado de Uttar Pradesh, foi construída pelo imperador mogol Akbar no início de 1570 e serviu como capital do império de 1571 a 1585. Foi abandonada depois de apenas 14 anos porque o abastecimento de água não era capaz de sustentar a crescente população. Akbar herdou o Império Mughal de seu pai Humayun e do avô Babur. Durante a década de 1560, ele reconstruiu o Forte de Agra e estabeleceu-o como sua capital. Ele teve um filho e gêmeos, mas os gêmeos morreram. Ele então consultou Salim Chishti, o santo sufi que vivia recluso na pequena cidade de Sikri, perto de Agra. Salim previu que Akbar teria outro filho e, de fato, um nasceu em 1569 em Sikri. Ele foi nomeado Salim para homenagear o santo e mais tarde governaria o império como Imperador Jahangir. No ano seguinte, Akbar, então com 28 anos, decidiu construir um palácio e uma cidade real em Sikri, para homenagear Salim Chishti.

  • Buland Darwaza: uma das portas de entrada para Jama Masjid.
  • Diwan-i-Am: Uma tipologia de construção encontrada em muitas cidades onde o governante atende o público em geral.
  • Diwan-i-Khas: Famosa por seu pilar central com trinta e seis volutas apoiando uma plataforma circular para Akbar.
  • Hujra-i-Anup Talao: Diz-se ser a residência da esposa muçulmana de Akbar, embora isso seja contestado devido ao seu pequeno tamanho.
  • Jama Masjid: a mesquita, construída à maneira das mesquitas indianas, com liwans ao redor de um pátio central.
  • Palácio Jodha Bai: O harém principal, domina o complexo do harém.
  • Palácio de Mariam-uz-Zamani: O prédio da esposa de Akbar mostra a influência Gujarati.
  • Naubat Khana: Perto da entrada, onde as chegadas importantes são anunciadas.
  • Quadra de Pachisi: Um quadrado marcado como um jogo de tabuleiro de grande porte.
  • Panch Mahal: uma estrutura palaciana de cinco andares. O piso inferior tem 176 colunas intrincadamente entalhadas.
  • Casa de Birbal: a casa do ministro favorito de Akbar, que era hindu.
  • Tumba de Salim Chisti: uma tumba revestida de mármore branco dentro do pátio do Jama Masjid.
