Galleria fotografica del Patrimonio dell’Umanità dell’UNESCO. Un sito del patrimonio mondiale è un punto di riferimento o un’area con protezione legale da una convenzione internazionale amministrata dall’Organizzazione delle Nazioni Unite per l’Educazione, la Scienza e la Cultura (UNESCO).

I siti del patrimonio mondiale sono designati dall’UNESCO per avere un significato culturale, storico, scientifico o di altro tipo. Si ritiene che i siti contengano «un patrimonio culturale e naturale di tutto il mondo considerato di eccezionale valore per l’umanità». Per essere selezionato, un Sito Patrimonio dell’Umanità deve essere un punto di riferimento in qualche modo unico che è identificabile geograficamente e storicamente e ha un significato culturale o fisico speciale. Ad esempio, i siti del patrimonio mondiale potrebbero essere antiche rovine o strutture storiche, edifici, città, deserti, foreste, isole, laghi, monumenti, montagne o aree selvagge. Un sito del patrimonio mondiale può significare un notevole traguardo dell’umanità e servire come prova della nostra storia intellettuale sul pianeta, oppure potrebbe essere un luogo di grande bellezza naturale. A giugno 2020, un totale di 1.121 siti del patrimonio mondiale (869 proprietà culturali, 213 naturali e 39 proprietà miste) esistono in 167 paesi; i tre paesi con la maggior parte dei siti sono Cina, Italia (entrambi 55) e Spagna (48).
